Adult Baptism in the Catholic Church

If you are an adult considering baptism — whether you were never baptized or are joining the Church from another tradition — you are about to begin one of the most meaningful journeys of your life. Here is exactly what to expect.

The RCIA process

Adult baptism happens through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) — a journey that typically lasts 8-12 months. You are not rushed; the Church walks with you through each stage: inquiry, catechumenate, purification, and finally initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Requirements for adult baptism

• Age: you must be past the age of reason (usually 7+, most adults start later).
• Intention: you must freely and consciously desire baptism.
• Catechesis: RCIA classes covering faith, sacraments, and Church teaching.
• Sponsor: a baptized, confirmed Catholic in good standing who walks with you.
• No prior baptism: if you were validly baptized in another Christian tradition, you may be received into the Church rather than re-baptized.

What happens at the ceremony

Adult baptism usually takes place at the Easter Vigil. You will: renounce sin and profess your faith, have water poured over your head (or be immersed), be anointed with sacred chrism, receive a white garment and a candle lit from the Paschal candle. Then — in the same ceremony — you may receive Confirmation and First Communion.

Do adults choose their own sponsor?

Yes. Your sponsor (godparent) should be someone whose faith you admire. They must be at least 16, a practicing Catholic who has received Confirmation, and — if married — married in the Church.
