St Joseph is the patron of the universal Church and the guardian of the Holy Family. Though not a single word of his is recorded in the Gospels, his actions speak of quiet, faithful obedience. The Gospel calls him a “righteous man” (Matthew 1:19).
When an angel revealed the child’s divine origin, Joseph woke and did exactly as commanded—he took Mary and Jesus into his home, becoming the foster father of the Son of God.
Pope Pius IX declared St Joseph Patron of the Universal Church in 1870. Pope Francis, in Patris Corde, described Joseph as a beloved, tender, obedient, and creatively courageous father.
St Joseph is patron of workers, carpenters, and fathers. The Church celebrates St Joseph the Worker on May 1. He is also invoked for a happy death, believed to have died in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
“To you, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our tribulations. Having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we now with hearts full of confidence earnestly beg you also to take us under your protection.”
The St Joseph Novena is popular for employment, family needs, and housing. His feast days are March 19 and May 1, opportunities to honor this great saint and ask his intercession.
