The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Way of the Cross or Via Crucis, follows the final hours of Jesus’s earthly life—from condemnation to burial. This ancient practice originated in Jerusalem, where pilgrims walked the actual path to Calvary.
Pontius Pilate, though finding no guilt in Jesus, surrenders to the crowd. The Innocent One is condemned. We recognize that our sins brought Christ to this sentence.
The heavy cross is laid on our Lord’s bruised shoulders. He accepts it willingly for love of us. “He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins” (Isaiah 53:5).
Weakened by the scourging, Jesus stumbles under the cross. He falls, but He rises again. In our own falls, let us not despair but turn to God’s mercy.
A sword of sorrow pierces Mary’s heart as she beholds her Son carrying the instrument of our redemption.
The soldiers compel Simon to carry the cross. We too are called to help carry others’ crosses. “Bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2).
A brave woman wipes our Lord’s face. Christ leaves His sacred image on her cloth. We ask for courage to serve Christ in those who suffer.
The weight of our sins presses down again. Jesus falls, but again He rises. The grace of perseverance is ours if we ask.
Jesus says: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children” (Luke 23:28).
Exhausted beyond measure, Jesus falls a third time. His strength is gone, but His love remains.
The soldiers tear away His garments. He who clothes the lilies of the field is stripped for our salvation.
The hammer blows ring out. He prays: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
At the ninth hour, Jesus cries out: “It is finished” (John 19:30). He bows His head and gives up His spirit.
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus place the sacred Body in the arms of His Mother.
The Body is wrapped in linen and placed in a new tomb. A stone is rolled across. But we know—the tomb will not hold Him.
Each station begins: “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.” Many churches pray the Stations every Friday during Lent.
