The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic faith. The Church teaches that Jesus Christ is truly, really, and substantially present — Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity — under the appearances of bread and wine. This is called the Real Presence.
In John 6, Jesus declares: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." When many disciples left Him over this teaching, He did not soften His words — He let them go.
At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and said: "This is my body." He took the cup and said: "This is my blood." The Church has taken Him at His word ever since.
The Church asks three things of those who wish to receive the Eucharist:
The Eucharist is not merely a meal or a memorial. It is the same sacrifice of Christ on Calvary, made present on the altar through the ministry of the priest. When you attend Mass, you are present at the one sacrifice that saves the world.
Receiving the Eucharist worthily unites us more deeply to Christ, separates us from sin, strengthens charity, preserves us from future mortal sin, and gives us a foretaste of heaven.
