Catholic Baptism Requirements โ Complete Checklist for Parents
Preparing for your child's baptism is a beautiful โ and sometimes overwhelming โ process. Here is everything you need to prepare, from documents to godparents, so nothing catches you by surprise.
1. Contact your parish early
Begin by contacting your parish 2-3 months before the planned baptism date. Most parishes have baptism preparation classes, and scheduling fills up quickly, especially around Easter and Christmas.
2. Baptism preparation classes
Most parishes require parents (and sometimes godparents) to attend a baptism preparation session. These classes cover the meaning of the sacrament, the rite itself, and your role in raising your child in the faith. Some parishes offer online preparation โ ask about options.
3. Required documents
- Child's birth certificate โ to register the baptism.
- Parents' identification and marriage certificate (if married in the Church).
- Certificate of baptism preparation if completed at another parish.
- Godparent eligibility forms โ completed by the godparents' parishes.
4. Choosing godparents (sponsors)
The Church requires at least one godparent, and godparents must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be baptized and confirmed Catholics who receive the Eucharist.
- If married, be married in the Catholic Church.
- Not be the child's parent.
A baptized Christian from another tradition may serve as a witness alongside a Catholic godparent, but not as the sole sponsor.
5. The baptism ceremony
At the ceremony you will: renew your own baptismal promises, renounce sin, and present your child for baptism. The priest will pour water over your child's head (or immerse them), anoint with chrism, and present the white garment and candle. You'll need a white baptismal garment and a baptismal candle.
6. Practical checklist
- โ Baptismal garment (white)
- โ Candle (often provided by parish)
- โ Godparents confirmed
- โ Preparation class attended
- โ Documents submitted
